Remodeling Tips For Bedroom Closets

Most of us here in New York City live in apartments where every square foot counts. Way back in 1808, the novelist Elizabeth Hamilton wrote "Do everything in its proper time, keep everything to its proper use, put everything in its proper place."  She was way ahead of her time and the apartment-dweller in Manhattan should heed those words now more than ever.  Nothing can make a small apartment feel smaller than disorganization.

On my website, cityhammer.com, we have many categories of home improvement specialists listed, but closet organizers are one of our most popular searches. Here are some great tips from some of the best closet and built-in people in New York City.   Some of these require professional help so feel free to visit our site to find the right company for the job.

  • Figure out your storage priorities.  Identifying what you need handy and what you don't is the first step.  We have four seasons in New York; therefore, many of us have four wardrobes!  When summer rolls around, your sweaters and heavy garments should go in clear plastic containers and drawers, preferably, the ones that slide right under your bed.  This will allow you to remove them from the equation and most importantly protect them.  Doing this each season should clear out a lot of the clutter, making even more room for the skeletons in your closet!
  • Don't be afraid to make use of the back wall space or back of the door with over-door organizers or hooks.  We're talking about hanging hats, shoe bags, belts, etc.
  • Beware of the one-rod closet; it's the number one space-waster in closet-land.  Raise the single rod toward the top of your closet and add a second half the way down.  Making use of vertical closet space is the key.  Remember that the more you hang, the more you can fit.
  • Any good carpenter can build you adjustable-height shelving and this will give you the versatility to keep certain items at eye level and others out of your way.  Most real estate brokers will tell you that these types of built-in features can add much more value to an apartment than what they cost to build.  The prospective buyer sees this as "one less thing I have to do."
  • Eliminating must is a must!  Be careful with storing your clothing and linens.  Having a full-fledged walk-in cedar closet is not always an option in an apartment but piling up your clothes on a painted surface shelf is going to give your duds an unwanted musty odor that you may not even notice.  Even sleeping with sheets that have been piled up this way can leave you with material that sticks to your skin.  Try a stainless steel shelving unit or clear plastic bins for the top of your closet.
  • Not everything you have will hang or fold.  Make sure to include narrow drawers in your plan to store smaller items like jewelry, scarves, and socks. Narrow drawers can be further equipped with divider trays to keep things neat.
  • Even hanging clothing can be attacked by odor and wrapping your things in plastic is definitely not the answer because your garments need to breathe.  Keeping the closet doors open will allow dust to get in so that would basically be counterproductive.  There are several methods you can use to keep your closet smelling fresh without drowning your wardrobe in Febreeze!  Unless you remove the moisture or humidity, sprays will only cover up the problem.  Try a hanging dehumidifier pouch like Damp Rid, the original non-electric moisture absorber.  Lavender sachets, scented bars of soap, even empty incense boxes can all play a part once the moisture issue is under control.  Also don't forget if you have carpeting in your closet that, believe it or not, it's got to get vacuumed, too.

As an added bonus to planning and building the perfect closet, you will probably end up throwing away many unnecessary items (yellow livestrong bracelets?) and turning up some of your fabled lost treasures (love letters, unused gift certificates!), so don’t wait, get organized!
