Go Outside and Take a Walk with the Brooklyn Blogade
Prospect Park Boathouse Photo by Alexander H.M. CasconeIt seems that "Brooklyn's Backyard", otherwise known as Prospect Park is the place to be this Sunday. Two great Brooklyn-based bloggers are throwing a Brooklyn Blogade Picnic and inviting everyone down to see the park and what it has to offer.
Brenda from Prospect: A Year in the Park, will be giving visitors a guided tour starting at 11 am, followed by food and drink around the Music Pagoda. The guys from Dope on the Slope will also be on hand, and if you haven't checked out their blog, "Chronicling the Brooklynization of Two Tennessee Hillbillies," hook yourself up...great stuff.
Prospect Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux, the same team that built Central Park in Manhattan, so if you haven't experienced it yet, this is a great excuse to head over.

Happy July 4th to New York
Photo by Howard N2GOTOK, so the weather wasn't perfect, and thanks to absurdly priced commodities of every variety and the Wall Street/ Real Estate credit crisis, there's not much economic optimism for the remainder of 2008.
That's OK. Its holidays like July 4th that remind us how great it is to live, work and celebrate in New York, as last night's fireworks display viewed from the Brooklyn Bridge reminds us (above).
Happy Independence Day weekend from cityhammer.com!

NY Home Improvement Blog Patrol
Photo by neotintIts official: Ikea has landed in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The Observer's The Real Estate has the story. The emergence of the big box retailer as a Brooklyn fixture has and will be a controversial topic for a long time to come. Unless you are the landlord they are paying the lease to. Or you absolutely love putting together furniture with instructions in Scandinavian. The naysayers will snipe, but we predict the store will be packed.
Ikea Opens in Brooklyn / New York furniture assemblers
As the temperature climbs along with our Con Ed bills, it may be good idea to think about the little things that add up to excess power consumption during the peak summer A/C season. Charles & Hudson reminds us to check and possibly replace our refrigerator's gasket, as cold air leaking out is a big waste. If your fridge isn't sealing correctly, you'll pay for it in electricity bills and food that expires before its time.

Cleaning out his camera's memory, Mitchell Hall of NYC Blog Estate came across a bunch of great shots of the Upper West Side. The photos are a good reminder of why we love New York.

How Many (insert here) Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb?

Q: How many Brooklyn-based bloggers does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: Four; One to change the bulb, and the other three to lament about how good the old one used to be.
Just kidding, but here's a serious tip for changing out old bulb's, especially from a ceiling fixture. When changing out non-traditional shaped lightbulbs that have been in the fixture for a while, sometimes the screwed-in base gets stuck and only the glass, incandescent part comes free.
Never fear, simply take a screwdriver handle, put a damp cloth over it, and use that to fit into the base and twist it free. The mositure will help grip the metal and the screwdriver handle is usually the right size and shape for the job.
Don't ever use pliers to remove a stuck-in lightbulb base, you could end up damaging the fixture itself, or worse, get an electric shock.
That's our tip of the day, probably more helpful than three paragraphs on the closing of a dry cleaner in Red Hook...
